Fall is the perfect time for family photos. I’ve been asked about what to wear and how to plan outfits. Here a few tips on planning your wardrobe for your family photos from some of my clients and myself.
Feel free to be yourself! There’s no need to force yourself into something uncomfortable that you’d never normally wear (this goes for girls and guys). Avoid large logos, and words printed as they can be a distraction. Don’t be afraid of color. Fun, colorful outfits make your pictures pop! have fun with your style and show us who you are.
Julianne, mom of three girls says: “I usually go through all the girls closets and look for something I love or good color coordinates: I like a couple of actual colors (instead of neutrals, which are gorgeous but we don’t look great in them) in my pics. I end up seeing something I love or something with a couple good color combos then gather ALL our clothes that go with those and make a huge pile. Then I keep them out to mull over and get a friend to come over and help me mix and match until we get a good combo with not too much pattern, similar style, a little of each color, and nothing ugly (I had something I thought I loved once and my friend had to break it to me, it looked like pajamas).”

Kristen, mom of one sweet boy and a baby girl on the way says: “I think people can take inspiration from the colors in their homes because those are the colors they generally like and gravitate toward. I also like mixing patterns and textures for visual interest so long as the patterns aren’t so dominant that they would distract from the people in the photos.”
Its a great idea to consider what you will be doing with your photos. You might use them for a Christmas card or hang canvases on the wall. If they are hanging in your home consider pulling colors you see so the photos will match well.

If you tend to lean more towards neutral tones, you can always let your kiddos be the pop of color.

Another great idea is interweaving one color throughout each outfit in some way or another. It can be a simple tie in of colors and look really nice together.
Kamisha, mom of three says: “I like choosing one or two colors as a theme. Sometimes I find a dress or a shirt and build all the family outfits around that”

Hope that helps as you plan for your next family photo session! Have fun with it!! Feel free to send me ideas beforehand too if you’d like an extra opinion.
The First Look is so special. 💕 It’s a time set aside, before the ceremony, for just the bride and groom to see each other and have a moment before they go into the rest of their day together.
